The Koivuniemi solar power plant site in Raasepori, was expanded, with the aim of inventorying the five-hectare expansion area.
The preparatory phase included an archival survey, examination of old maps and analysis of laser scanning data. Using this information, we created accurate beach migration models of the area, which helped us to determine the possible settlement history of the area. During the fieldwork phase, we inspected and documented known antiquities, walked the entire site in search of possible Stone Age finds, inspected the area for abundant windfalls, documented a World War I defensive position on the edge of the site, and made small test pits at promising locations.
In our research, we found small pits and boundary markers made of stones. The pits may be the pots of the Dragsvik’s soldiers, while the boundary markers indicate a possible connection with the nearby railway. By combining different research methods, we provide reliable information about the history and cultural heritage of the area.
