The former Stora Enso headquarters, designed by Alvar Aalto and completed in 1962, is one of the landmarks of Helsinki. Ark-byroo has acted as principal architect and architectural designer for the conversion and restoration of this listed building, and has developed a output data model for the baseline of the project.
The building was first information modelled based on old drawings. During the master planning phase, the building was laser-scanned and the building information model was refined to reflect the current situation. This refined BIM, based on a point cloud, served as a reliable tool during the implementation phase, providing up-to-date data. The point cloud data was shared with the design team via a web-based tool, allowing easy access to up-to-date and illustrative source data on the property.
A robust and reliable output data model, played a key role in the building design project. An accurate model allowed for error-free design and implementation, while sharing the point cloud online reduced the need for physical site visits and made work time more efficient. The illustrative, photographic view of the point cloud promoted a common understanding between the parties and facilitated the reconciliation of different perspectives.
